The notion of power dressing was a revolution in the eighties. Big hair, big shoulder pads–it was very corporate but at the same time it made a big statement for a woman to be in a two-piece suit. These days, I think it's more a revolution for women to wear comfortable and unconventional things to the office.

Looser silhouettes can allow for so much freedom and confidence in the workplace. When you're comfortable, it's easier to focus on the task(s) at hand. But it's not just about billowy pants and roomy blazers–incorporating more pieces usually reserved for evening into a corporate wardrobe can be liberating (and provide many more options when getting dressed in the morning). I'm not referring to cocktail dresses, mini skirts or sexy sky-high heels. I'm talking about relaxed garments in satin or silk, special jewellery you never wear because you're waiting for the right occasion, or even those pieces that reveal just a little bit of skin, but only in the subtlest of ways. It might be a slit in a long skirt or pair of loose pants (à la Maiyet), or an unexpected cut-out in an otherwise generic shirt.

After all, boundaries are there to be pushed.

Fall Dressing

It's that time of year again! Here I take a look back at some of the trends of the fall 2013 collections.

Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang, Chanel, Balenciaga, Celine
There was a huge focus on minimal colours this season. Black, white and grey were all over the runways. Having a wardrobe full of these colours would make for easy outfit-planning. Also in the monochrome trend were other neutral colours like navy and cream.
Bottega Veneta, Valentino, Rochas, Dolce & Gabbana, Christian Dior
Fall took Dior's New Look of the 1950's and gave it a modern twist. Luxurious fabrics formed A-line dresses and skirts. Trés chic.
Prada, Marni, Fendi, Marc Jacobs, Hermès
Whether in the form of a chubby jacket, cuffs or a stole, fur featured in many of the collections. Most of the fur came in shades of brown, but the birds-of-paradise at Fendi were decked out in a rainbow of colours. Regardless of colour, a  fur coat is definitely an investment for fall dressing.
Jil Sander, Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton, Max Mara, Christopher Kane
Coats came in a variety of shapes, colours and textures for fall. The oversized silhouette, however, was a stand-out. A great way to add a masculine aspect to any outfit.

What I would pack for NYFW

Unfortunately I am not going to New York Fashion Week... But if I was, this is what I would bring with me (in an ideal world where I actually owned these things, of course).

1. Rochas black tote
The practical and stylish essential. I would want to have everything I needed with me at all times. Who knows what mysterious things could be stowed away in there!

2. Chloe sandals
Best saved for a warmer day, these sandals may look painful, but seem as though they would add a chic,  minimalist touch to any outfit.

3. Celine clutch
Could work for both day and evening wear. Stylish and versatile!

4. Valentino dress
I loved every look of this collection so it would be hard to choose just one piece. This elegant dress can be worn in so many ways. For NYFW, I would add a pair of statement earrings (see below) or wear under a fur coat if it was chilly.
5. Dolce and Gabbana earrings
Beautiful Italian baroque. Not much more to say, really.

6. Jil Sander heels
Who doesn't love this combination of metallic, neon and taupe?

7. Balenciaga jacket
A little bit bad-ass. Especially if Karlie Kloss was wearing it with black skinny jeans.

8. Proenza Schouler jacket (or entire outfit)
Classic and understated but still oozes that effortless cool that Jack and Lazaro have mastered.

9. Fendi heels
So desirable in this brown/maroon colour and possibly very versatile for fashion week.

10. Lanvin outfit
I'm invited to a fabulously exclusive party? Lucky I have this exact Lanvin outfit on hand!

Happy New Year!

I'm looking forward to starting a new year and having no idea what experiences and opportunities lay ahead. I'm all about being organised this year, and this goes for my wardrobe too. I want to invest in some classic pieces that I can wear all year. Mainly simple styles with a few statement pieces to play with. Here are some looks that are floating around my mind.

Back to Spring again...

Oh my goodness, I'm so behind with everything. Days are just flying past so quickly. Just still looking at some Spring 2011 collections. I'm living in the past, I know.
Anyway, Celine. I'm not usually a fan of minimalism or 'sporty-chic' (being the very unsport and uncoordinated person that I am), but somehow this collection appealed to me. I really like the clean and crisp lines used in these garments.
